How to Identify a Letter From a Morse Code Pattern

There’s a faster way in: count the signals first. Every letter in Morse code is built from a specific number of dots and dashes, and that count alone narrows the field to a small, manageable group of possible letters before you even look at the pattern itself.

Start by Counting the Signals

Before you try to match a pattern, count how many dots and dashes it contains. That number alone tells you how many letters you’re choosing between:

A single signal narrows things down to just 2 possible letters. Two signals give you 4 possible letters. Three signals give you 8 possible letters. Four signals give you 12 possible letters. Once you know the count, you only need to check the pattern against a short list instead of the entire alphabet.

There are only two letters made from a single signal, and they’re the two most common letters in English — which is exactly why Morse code assigns them the shortest patterns.

NKY N, K, and Y

GOQZ G, O, Q, and Z

A Faster Method: The Binary Decision Tree

Once counting signals feels natural, there’s a quicker method: treat each pattern as a series of branching choices. Start at the first signal — a dot sends you down one branch, a dash sends you down the other. Each following signal branches again, narrowing the possibilities until only one letter is left.

For example, a dot first narrows you toward E, I, S, or H, among others, while a dash first points toward T, M, O, or similar dash-heavy letters. Add the next signal and the branch narrows again. This is essentially how trained Morse operators read code in real time — not by counting and matching, but by recognizing the shape of the branch a pattern falls into.
