International Morse Code vs. American Morse Code: What’s the Difference?

When people say “Morse code” today, they almost always mean International Morse Code — the standardized system behind amateur radio, aviation beacons, and every modern Morse code translator, including this one. But it’s not the original version.

That was American Morse Code (also called Railroad Morse), and it worked differently enough that using the two interchangeably will produce wrong translations.

What Is American Morse Code?

American Morse Code is the original system developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s and 1840s for the American telegraph network. It’s the code behind the first long-distance telegraph message, “What hath God wrought,” sent between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore in 1844.

Unlike the clean dot-dash system most people picture, American Morse used three distinct timing elements rather than two: a standard dash, a longer “double dash,” and — unusually — a small pause built into the middle of certain letters themselves. The letter C, for example, was sent as two dots, a brief internal pause, then one more dot, rather than one continuous pattern.

What Is International Morse Code?

International Morse Code is the simplified, standardized version most people learn today. It was developed by German engineer Friedrich Clemens Gerke in 1848 and formally adopted as the global standard at the International Telegraph Convention in Paris in 1865.

International Morse strips the system down to just two elements — a dot and a dash, in a strict 1:3 length ratio — with no internal pauses inside any letter. The Key Structural Differences

Number of Signal Types

American Morse effectively used three timing elements (a normal dash, a long dash, and an internal pause), while International Morse uses only two (a dot and a dash). Fewer distinct elements makes International Morse far easier to send and receive accurately, especially by ear.

Internal Letter Spacing

This is the most technically significant difference. In American Morse, some letters have a pause inside the letter itself, not just between letters. International Morse eliminated this entirely — every letter is a single unbroken sequence of dots and dashes, which removes a major source of confusion and error.

Different Codes for Many Letters

Roughly half the alphabet was recoded when International Morse was standardized, so a letter’s pattern can differ meaningfully between the two systems. The letter O is a clear example: in American Morse it involves a dot, a pause, then two more dots with irregular internal timing, while in International Morse it’s simply three clean dashes (– – –). Because of this, a message written in American Morse won’t decode correctly using an International Morse chart, and vice versa.

Why International Morse Replaced American Morse

American Morse’s internal letter-spacing worked reasonably well on short domestic telegraph lines, but it broke down as telegraphy expanded internationally. On long undersea cables, the electrical properties of the cable itself tended to blur short internal pauses, making American Morse unreliable over long distances. At the same time, international telegraph networks needed a single, unambiguous standard usable across countries and equipment. Gerke’s simplified system solved both problems, and international adoption in 1865 sealed American Morse’s decline outside the United States.

Where American Morse Code Still Shows Up Today

American Morse Code is now almost entirely historical. It survives mainly in railroad museums, antique telegraph equipment collections, and historical reenactment communities focused on 19th-century American telegraphy. If you’re researching pre-1865 telegraph records or restoring vintage equipment, you may encounter it — but it’s not in practical or professional use anywhere today.

Which One Should You Learn?

International Morse Code, without exception, unless you have a specific historical or restoration reason to study the American version. Is American Morse Code the same as Morse code? +

Not quite. “Morse code” today almost always refers to International Morse Code, the standardized global system. American Morse Code is the earlier, original version, structurally different enough that the two aren’t interchangeable.
